I also thought the way the author described the inner thoughts of the protagonist was really good, and reminded me of just the sort of things I would catch myself thinking when I was younger (and maybe occasionally today too, if I'm being honest). I imagine when this book was first published in 1968 it was quite a hit, but now I’d say it’s just good, not necessarily great. He sets a trap that's sure to apprehend the black fox by sundown, but Tom can't let him kill the majestic creature and her cub. Tom is a very independent young boy he loves to make Lego models and build wild things with his imagination. Garoche’s drawings are impressively detailed, from the nest’s many small bits to the developing first feathers on the chicks and the wall smudges and exposed wiring of the renovation.

Not wanting to ruin their vacation, Tom pretends he's looking forward to being stuck on a farm for most of summer, but in truth he doesn't see how he could possibly enjoy the upcoming months. Crawford isn’t supposed to work the case because it’s not his circle; Lombardo isn't supposed to work undercover because “Operation Highway” has been shut down, and she’ll get killed. Petie and I turned them all out on the grass and first Petie chose one and then I chose one until they were all gone.I thought one time that if there was some way to turn your life ahead like a clock, then I would probably lose half my life turning it ahead to avoid waiting for things. Yes, he talks about his best friend so much that I still remember his name THREE YEARS after reading the book. Due to the popularity of her books with children, she was listed as one of the Educational Paperback Association's top 100 authors. The Midnight Fox is an atmospheric and heartfelt story, and one of Betsy Byars’ best-loved classics. My other issue with this story is that not much really happens plot-wise, which I suppose is a result of most of the pages being dedicated to Tom’s aforementioned thoughtfulness and insight.

This was something we were working on as class during literacy lessons and I thought I noticed some 'magpieing' taking place! Whether we live in the countryside or a bustling city, most of us have seen a fox during our lifetime. I also think it was great because children can relate to what they do over the summer to this story.Tom is very reluctant to sacrifice his summer in such a way, believing that he will have an awfully boring time, and will long to go home as soon as he reaches the farm. From the name and cover, it looked like it was going to be a bit twee and without much merit, but I was pleasantly surprised, as I mentioned. From Nobel Laureates Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter to theatre greats Tom Stoppard and Alan Bennett to rising stars Polly Stenham and Florian Zeller, Faber Drama presents the very best theatre has to offer.
