About this deal

Neuroscientist Usha Goswami, chair of the 2023 judging panel, explains why it is important to get children excited about science via books, and introduces us to the fabulous titles that made this year’s shortlist. I'd also tighten up the middle of the story; it felt a little drawn-out, where for a while they kept getting clues but not getting any closer to solving the mystery!

She is one of the best-developed voices of a teenager I've come across: she sways between hey I'm just a kid and I am all so grown up. To give you a sense of the kind of person we’re dealing with: she was filming something towards the end of her career, and the director took her to one side to talk about a scene, and she said, ‘I’m not sure quite what I’m doing? I’ve written to people linked to Yaddo and all sorts of other people, and the secretary of Yaddo has come back with stuff, but I’ve yet to be able to track down anyone who knew Slade, or knows her descendants – no one has been able to put me in touch with them. It was all unscripted, all done in one take, and he was based in a shed – you’d see his fly fishing things behind him, and a blunderbuss or two. Plot - I enjoyed the plot of this book, it was a perfect palette cleanser after reading dark books and epic fantasies. Now, when she finds this book, instead of throwing it away like a sensible person does because of the magical powers, she instead uses it to her own purposes for a good chunk of the book, doing whatever she wanted with people, which just makes it very uncool. Had it been clear from the start that this was set in 2017, I wouldn't have found myself confused over which are Emma's entries and which are of the book's previous owner. Somewhere online, there is a review of it, in the New York Times or another New York newspaper, and it raves about it. There’s just something about her, she’s one of those classic British eccentrics, and The Sioux is a classic, eccentric novel. Mit viel Geschick lässt die Autorin auch eine Liebesgeschichte einfließen, die an "Stolz und Vorurteil" von Jane Austen erinnert und so ergibt sich eine Mischung aus Romantik, Komödie und Fantasy.

He was born in Romania, came to England, was published by the Woolfs, then went to the US and worked in the grain industry for a while but got bored and teamed up with Orson Welles (as you do). Sie handelte von Liebe, von Freundschaft, von Verlust, dem Zauber der Magie und dem Erwachsenwerden und auch, wenn sie nicht ganz an meine Altersklasse gerichtet war, konnte sie mich vollends verzaubern. Houseman came from Romania to England and he was already writing, and I think he just sent something to them, and they said, ‘Very nice, we’ll publish it. It's unsurprising that Darcy was my favourite: while he comes across as condescending and arrogant, he's actually a really nice guy and a loving brother. Absolutely, and he’s fascinating about Orson Welles, obviously, and you see his complete incredulity at the War of the Worlds drama.

While most of them arrived in Alpha Centauri, the generation starship Pathfinder was never heard from again. Actually, thinking about it again now – and this is going to sound awful, but I don’t mean the incestuous bit, just the overall dysfunctional, weird, rich family – you could probably replace everyone’s surname with Trump. I went into this with a bit of dread: Gläser's previous book, The Book Jumpers, had such a promising concept but fell quite short of everything. He is also introduced to a woman, who is probably in her 30s, who has bought a big house in Lymington. The premise of a book that makes whatever is written in it come true was explored in interesting (and sometimes bittersweet) ways. But when I come to the middle, it has just been destroyed by too much love drama and high school drama. And was I the only one who did not find the ending surprising at all, but rather more of a dull monologue of events. The mother is awfully protective of the son, and it could be mildly incestuous, you’re never quite sure, and everyone is dysfunctional, and they’re all extremely rich, and it’s very dark and very funny. Also, try other subreddits like What's That Book, Books, and printSF when you can only remember the cover.
