About this deal

The reason it's so scary is because if you find a skull you don't just lose the round, you lose a card. Lose all four and you're out of the game. But the stakes are higher than that because if you manage to get all flowers you win that hand. And it only takes two winning hands to take the whole game. Play the challenge. Once a challenge has been issued, no new cards may be placed by any player. Players must choose to raise the number of cards or pass. If a player passes, their turn is skipped until the challenge has been resolved. Once all but one player passes or a player chooses to call out the maximum number of cards, that player must resolve the challenge. If you cannot place down another card, you must issue a challenge. Now comes the fun part! Whenever a player has outbid everyone with a number, it’s now time for them to start turning over cards they think are flowers. As soon as this Challenger turns over a skull in this process, they have failed and the round ends. No more cards are revealed.

Open the bidding, by vocally stating how many flower cards they think they can turn over in a row among those that have been collectively played so far (as in, uninterrupted, without revealing a skull card).And as all the information comes in, things just get worse. Each wager carries behind it a mortal weight of doubt and half-truths. The noises get a bit louder. Deal each player one of the square mats, so the colourful side is facing up. Each colour has four associated circular mats to go with it – these consist of three flower cards, and one skull card. Deal these out, too. In all cases, the challenger will remain the only one to know if the discarded card is a Skull or a Rose. If the challenger reveals a Skull, they have failed and stops flipping cards for their bet immediately. If the challenger flips the number of cards called and reveals only Roses, the bet is won and the challenger flips his or her game mat so that the Roses side is visible.

All players start with a hand of four circular cards (three roses and one skull) and a playing mat in front of them. Unless you're part of the perfect logic play brigade that is. If you want to game this game, you can. You can deliberately place a skull and then a silly bid to sacrifice one of your cards to stop someone else winning, for instance. Most gamers will rightly recoil from the mere idea of throwing away an advantage to stop another player. The Skull has been revealed among the cards of an opponent: the challenger shuffles his cards and places them face down. The opponent randomly selects, without touching it, one card to be discarded. That card is placed in the middle of the table and remains hidden. In some circumstances, a player might find themselves with only one card left. If it is a skull, then if they later become the Challenger, they have no choice but to turn it over and eliminate themselves. The only way they can win in this situation is via the rare point made above, in which they are the last player standing. It’s extremely unlikely they would make it this far without getting caught out, but it’s worth noting, should it arise!
