About this deal

After the departure of Bernard Butler Suede managed to survive reinvented as a chirpier brit-pop band, that doesn´t mean that they actually sound like Oasis or Cast in this record, but it´s a far cry from the melodramatic 'Dog Man Star' and 'Suede'. Richard Oakes proves he is a competent and effective guitarist, but not particularly imaginative, sometimes is a bit like 'Suede by numbers' and Butler is missed. McNulty, Bernadette (22 March 2007). "The return of Britpop's lost boy". The Daily Telegraph. Archived from the original on 22 October 2018 . Retrieved 21 October 2018. The 1996 long-player shoved two fingers in the air to critics who predicted Suede were a spent force after Bernard Butler had departed (shortly before 1994’s Dog Man Star was completed) and achieved something the previous album hadn’t, by being a big commercial success with an incredible five top ten hit singles during the 1996/7. a b Sullivan, Caroline (30 August 1996). The Irish Times. Archived from the original on 20 October 2020 . Retrieved 1 October 2019.After peaking in 1995, Britpop entered a strangely quiet state of commercial limbo beginning in 1996. The critical disaster of Oasis' Be Here Now was still a year away, but Oasis, Blur, and Pulp all failed to release a studio album during the calendar year and all eventually proved to be beyond their prime. Enter Suede, who had just parted ways with lead guitarist Bernard Butler and were reeling from the disappointing sales of (the now-revered) Dog Man Star. Yet despite having better reasons to fade away than any of Britpop's "Big Four", Suede somehow managed to deliver 1996's most successful Britpop album with Coming Up. Well-deserved success that earned the band their second #1 album over in the UK, even if the subsequent twenty years have been less kind to Coming Up than to either Suede or Dog Man Star. And what a dazzling, spangly pop album Coming Up, remains, made shinier still by expert remastering. Anderson cites the surging outsiders anthem Trash as the pinnacle, but Beautiful Ones is more remarkable, the urgent, knotty wordplay of its verses giving way to an ecstatic chorus which embodies the album's title (the demo fascinatingly reveals that the song began life as Beatles-y whimsy). That these big pop beasts were interspersed with savage melodramas like She and swooning love songs like Picnic by the Motorway made Coming Up more alluring and enduring.Following the departure of Butler, the band also brought in a new guitarist, 17-year-old Richard Oakes, who made his studio album debut on this release.
