Really, if you thought about it, I had to message him again. In a cool, casual, not desperate kinda way obviously. But with a question this time. So if he saw it and didn’t reply, then I’d know for sure he was ignoring me. I was *so* excited to receive this ARC as Sophie Gonzales is one of my favorite YA authors, and throughout the novel I kept pushing myself to continue just in case it got better—but I'm about 70% through and it's not getting better and I fear I'm going to be put into a reading slump if I try and finish this one out, so I'll outline why I DNF'd in case anybody else finds it helpful.

Ollie, our main character, is one of these characters I want to protect and hug and just wonderful. He’s kind and yet socially awkward a tiny little bit, he’s caring and just so relatable in the way he views things and life. He makes mistakes and assumptions and is really far from perfect, but despite his flaws, you just want him to be okay and happy. I really wanted him to be happy. She is the author of THE LAW OF INERTIA, ONLY MOSTLY DEVASTATED and PERFECT ON PAPER. IF THIS GETS (co-written with Cale Dietrich) is forthcoming in Fall 2021 from Wednesday Books / Macmillan.The theme of the book isn't a new one.High school setting with an out character and one firmly in the closest.But this is truly engaging.Told only from Ollie's pov and I think I fell for him instantly. This story has been blurbed as a sort of Grease-inspired YA and I could get the overall feeling of that, with the group of “Pink Ladies” and the group of Basketball Players, a.k.a the T-Birds. Still, if I got the overall feels, Only Mostly Devastated felt fresh and new, maybe because my memories of Grease are fuzzy, but well, I appreciated it all the more for it. Only Mostly Devastated is one of these feel-good, wonderful contemporaries I’ll still think about fondly in a couple months and years, I think. This story perfectly juggled with all the emotions I’m looking for in a contemporary: endearing, heartwarming, swoony moments, friendships and romance, family and heartbreaking moments, too.

If I had to give a criticism, it would be that Skye and Maya didn't have distinct enough voices for the first half. I kept mixing them up. They 'sounded' (in my head) like the same person. 🤷‍♀️ No distinct mannerisms or tones to set them apart. In the last half of the book I began to see their differences a bit more and their individual voices became more apparent. 💕 All I'd needed was a Destiny's Child song playing as an overture and it would've been the greatest "screw you" since Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind." That’s the beautiful thing about the universe. It puts you through trials, but it never gives you anything you can’t handle. We grow from these things.”

Y BUENO! La trama romántica, por favor. Al inicio vislumbramos más similitudes con Grease, pero una vez la historia comienza a rodar, tiene vida y voz propia. La trama es un tira y afloja constante, pero no es tóxico (como se podría intuir en un principio). Se tratan temas que en pocas novelas he visto: el espacio personal, las prioridades con la pareja, el interesarte en sus cosas, el apoyo etc. Y son temas que se hablan directamente, cara a cara, siendo totalmente transparentes el uno con el otro. Except for creating one of my most hated men ever, though, Sophie Gonzales and her books are a little like best friends, and even if this metaphor started off as a little joke, I don't think it is anymore. I mean, think about it:
