About this deal

When Viv first starts creating the Moxie 'zines and working towards dismantling the school's patriarchal system, she's so gung-ho about it that she tends to fly off the handle whenever anyone says anything incorrect. I think a lot of feminists have been in her shoes (I know I have, and it took me a few years to learn that I don't have to get angry at every person who hasn't been educated).

We also watch several other characters grow a lot - as in the case with Viv's best friend, who turns her nose up at the thought of feminism in the beginning of the book, but as she learns more about the movement, she steadily becomes more open-minded until she is finally proud to call herself a feminist, too. All meetings are online — join from anywhere in the world. You can attend live or send your work/questions and watch the recording later, whenever it’s convenient for you. Do I have to complete my MicroBook in 4 weeks? Vivian finds a note from an anonymous girl who says she was raped the previous year. Vivian gets "Moxie" supporters to stage a walkout in support of the girl. The majority of students participate, and Vivian reveals that she started "Moxie". Past MicroBook Magic alumni have written memoirs, how-tos, philosophy ideas, essay collections, manifestos, introductions to a topic, journals, workbooks, travel diaries, cultural musings — just about anything you imagine could become a MicroBook, and this course will help you finally get your book done. All the resources are available in multiple formats: written, audio, and video with closed captions and transcripts. No longer is self-publishing the vanity option. In fact, I think these days doggedly pursuing the traditional publishers is more like vanity publishing. Seth: "But I promise that from now on I'm going to try to listen better about the stuff I can't totally understand because I'm a guy." It’s an honour every single day. I help the world’s most interesting, cool, and exciting people do an incredibly hard thing they’re not quite sure they’ll be able to do: write a book that’ll change someone’s world. The author recommends "Feministing" as one of her "Feminist" blog resources. Feministing, if you aren't familiar with it, was founded by Jessica Valenti; a true paragon of maturity who is perhaps best recognized from a photo circulating the internet of her, on the beach, wearing a "I bathe in male tears" sweatshirt. And oh, while we're at it, let's have some quotes from Miss Valenti:

You can always play the bump ’n’ grab game with me, if that helps,” Seth says, and the tiny part of me that wishes he wouldn’t make a joke of it disappears as soon as we press our lips together.” My English teacher, Mr. Davies, rubs a hand over his military buzz cut. There’s sweat beading at his hairline, and he puffs out his ruddy cheeks. He looks like a drunk porcupine. At my old school I was vice president of this club called GRIT,” Lucy tells us. “It stood for Girls Respecting and Inspiring Themselves. It was, like, a feminist club.” Just a wild guess,” says Claudia with a roll of her eyes. She’s tinier than me, the top of her head only reaching my shoulder, and I have to lean in to hear her. At 5'10? and a junior in high school, I’m afraid I might still be growing, but Claudia’s been the size of a coffee-table tchotchke since the sixth grade.

So firstly, I really did watch the movie and think it was quite faithful. Having just reread the book, it’s actually nowhere near as close as I thought, but I do feel like they got the vibe just right. So if you’ve not read the book or watched the movie – you may want to beware! There will be spoilers ahead! Comparing the more minor plot elements I don’t know if you could really get it,” I say, sighing. “Not until someone plays the bump ’n’ grab game with you.” The world is an evil, sexist cesspit that won't let you dress the way you want because you're a girl. Families can talk about the culture of sexual harassment in Moxie. Does anything like this exist at your school? If girls at your school stand up to boys who harass them, what's the response from other students and school administrators?

Avoid comparisonitis. Every book takes its own time to happen — some people write faster than others, and that’s okay. Look to your fellow writers for support and inspiration — but keep your eyes on your own MicroBook and make it happen.I do want to place a content warning for sexual harassment and talk of rape/sexual assault (meaning we don’t necessarily see these events unfold like the sexual harassment spread throughout the book, but I still think it warrants a disclaimer that these sensitive topics are being discussed.) I said,” Mitchell begins, enjoying himself, “make … me … a … sandwich.” His fellow football-player minions laugh like it’s the freshest, most original bit of comedy ever, even though all of them have been using this line since last spring. I kind of love how unapologetically feminist this book is. The author touches on a lot of different feminist topics, and even mentions how those topics intersect with lgbt issues and with racism. I was expecting the book to be very one-dimensional dealing with those topics. But this book was better than that. There are characters who do sexist things despite trying their best, other characters call them out, and they grow and change. Yay for second chances and character development. I have to say, I would've appreciate a bit more actual intersectionality, rather than characters just talking about it. But in general, that aspect of the book was great. Do you think the author unfairly singles out football players as the ones who commit the worst offenses toward girls? Do you think athletes often get a free pass when it comes to bad behavior? Viv’s mum being cooler in the movie is a nice touch – she is more in touch with her “misspent youth” and less ashamed of it. I think Viv’s connection with it makes more sense that way.

As part of onboarding week, you’ll dig into your reasons for writing, and figure out which idea is best for you right now — then we’ll get you writing and finishing it, so you can move onto the next MicroBook idea! My only complaint about this book - and the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 - is that the story itself relies so heavily on the feminist aspect that the parts in between, where we're just focusing on Viv's daily life, friendships, romance, etc., fall short a little. The writing felt very young at times, and I actually had to remind myself several times that Viv was a junior in high school, because a lot of her wording and inner monologues just felt more like they were coming from a 14- or 15-year-old, at most.I would like to add a trigger warning for a lot of gross things being said about rape victims, which are called out, obviously. Could you have gone with a more stereotypical depiction? I've ranted and raved about this idiotic trope, Football Players are Stupid Sexist Dudebros, more times than I can count. How very new and original and not at all, in itself, a sexist depiction that's been around for decades. Am I supposed to be impressed by the fact that the football players are the bad guys here?
