About this deal

The 2.5 also offers extra cushioning materials to achieve the perfect blend of cushioning and support. The Escalante 2.5 retains some of the most popular features of previous versions and makes improvements in others. Heel-to-Toe Drop

DPT/Footwear Science: A (A great job of implementing natural feeling shoe and minimalist footwear for running and beyond) On top of its durability, the outsole also has a solid bite on gravel, damp roads, and even light trails. With Inner Flex grooves and FootPod outsole design, the Escalante 2.5 feels very elastic and can flex naturally with the foot. This combination helps to propel runners forward while increasing the efficiency of each stride. Zero-drop fans everywhere will love running in the Escalante 2.5 for their fast-tempo training needs. The shoe got 111% stiffer after spending 20 minutes in the freezer. Shoes usually get 41.7% stiffer (on average).

Looking at the upper at the forefoot, it's again around the average (98.8mm vs 98.5mm). At the heel, it is much narrower: 66.6mm compared to 75.7mm. Topo Fli-lyte 3: 3mm heel to forefoot, broad rounded toe box. Bit more flexible and a bit more feel for the ground. Here is our review: Measuring the shoe's toebox width with a caliper confirmed our experience. The Escalante 3 comes in at 98.8 mm in the widest part of the forefoot which is slightly narrower than the average 100-102 mm among Altra shoes. Altra’s bread and butter is making zero-drop running shoes that encourage natural running movement. They achieve this through many technologies they developed themselves and employ as needed based on the type of shoe. They are not minimalist shoes per se because even though the heel-to-toe drop is zero, they have plenty of cushion.

David: The Altra Escalante is a low riding running shoe that has some cross over into daily wear as well. The shoe has a level 0mm drop platform with an ever so slight heel bevel and toe spring. For the most part this is a moderately flexible design that lets you do whatever you want with your mechanics. The shoe feels very similar to a traditional racing flat with a tad more cushion. The mechanics are very neutral throughout. From a "barefoot" mechanic standpoint, this is probably the closest option in the last year. Everything feels pretty natural throughout and there is a small bounce from the rigidity of the forefoot. The outsole traction is decent as well and you can take this on reasonably footed dirt and grass if you wanted to. The shoe has a light and nimble feel to it despite being 9.0 ounces. You definitely have to have some calf strength to be running in this shoe with a flat and low riding geometry. This is about as neutral as shoes come. Not a bad thing by any means, but something to keep in mind. Despite its name, the Altra Escalante 2.5 is actually the 4th version of this running shoe. As our Altra Escalante 2.5 Review will indicate, the latest version of this comfortable running shoe is an excellent option for runners.Insanely fast, lightweight running shoes with high performance cushioning. The Altra Escalante 2.5 replaces the Altra Escalante 2.0 (currently on sale!).

Looking at our caliper measurement, the widest part of the shoe's toebox comes in at 98.8 mm. This makes the Escalante 3 the same as the average.

I love the front of the shoe, but it starts to disappoint when looking toward the midfoot and heel. The Altra Escalante 3 features Altra EGO midsole cushioning — the updated model has more foam. Altra EGO was designed to be soft and plush while still dynamic, and it delivers exactly that with this new Escalante. The other technologies employed by Altra are Innerflex, Footshape design, and Balanced Cushioning. The Altra Escalante 3 is now more form-fitting. This can be a hit or a miss depending on your fit preferences. David: The Altra Escalante is a minimalist road running shoe that has a very natural feel to it. The shoe uses a 0mm drop platform, meaning there is no difference in height between the heel and the forefoot. The shoe has moderately flexible design to it and a comfortable knit upper. For some this will be a walking shoe/running shoe double and for some it could even be a speed work shoe.

Stability is usually attributed to the wide base and upper that's narrower than the base. This is what lab data can tell us in this case: Ultraspire Fitted Race Belt:The best way to carry your phone and goods on the run. No bounce and various sizes for waist. (Also recommend the Naked belt) Thanks to the shoe's wide midfoot and forefoot base, we never had to worry about losing our footing.Arch support….. seriously. The conventional shoe industry has no issue with arch support in shoes. But in the barefoot world, arch support is a no-no. Your arch has a specific purpose in the running gait. It should be trained to take the load upon landing and act as a spring upon take off. While the support is minimal, and I technically only felt it when walking, it’s there. The design flies in the face of the original Topo designs, where barefoot was king, so why the change?
