About this deal

Then, legendary Batman: The Animated Series creator PAUL DINI, STEVE LANGFORD, and JOHN McCREA (DEAD EYES, Hitman) petrify with the party antics of Shingo, the birthday clown with an appetite for more than cake! So begins a gripping graphic presentation of New York Times-bestselling author JOE HILL’s acclaimed novella, adapted by DAVID M. BOOHER ( Canto) and ZOE THOROGOOD ( The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott). Also features a bonus art gallery and an all-new introduction by author JOE HILL!

Probably best described as an anthology series. The first few issues follow the events of a town, but by the middle of the book each issue is an unrelated vignette held loosely together by the titular character. I actually tend to like that style of storytelling - Gaiman's Sandman does it very well. This book does it okay. STRAY DOGS is a heartbreakingly adorable suspense thriller by My Little Pony comic artists TONY FLEECS and TRISH FORSTNER. It’s Lady and the Tramp meets Silence of the Lambs.

The fourth story is even more so: a guy who’s thinking of skipping out on his pregnant wife meets his dead friend’s father who did something similar years ago and… they have a drink. It’s so utterly forgettable - honestly, I’ve had to remind myself twice now how that one ended. What a steep drop in quality from the first issue to the fourth! Issue 11 rallies against new media over saturation and the increasingly shorter attention spans of people in the modern age. The main character of this issue is a guy who neglected his family and ended up wishing he hadn't gotten so out of touch with them. The first story that wavers in quality for me. It’s not bad or anything, but it didn’t do all that much for me in the end. Just about some one-hit wonder in some fantasy post-apocalypse where he is the key to saving the world. I did like some of the crazy imagery we got though. The main plus for me was having Morazzo’s art all blown up in an oversized format. I said it in my Vol 1. review, but his art is the perfect mix of the best elements of Moebius, Frank Quitely, and Steve Dillon. If you are a big ICM fan, it’s worth double dipping in this OHC just for the art. Even if a story isn’t always great or misses the mark at points (cough, Hopscotch Melange, cough), Morazzo’s art is always a wonderful constant.

From bestselling writer JAMES TYNION IV ( Batman, Something is Killing the Children) and breakout artist MARTIN SIMMONDS ( Dying is Easy)! Alcoholic Parent: George, the viewpoint character of issue 18 was one. It ended up destroying his marriage.Throw the Dog a Bone: In issue 29, the main character is contemplating his family's cycle of bad choices, literally travelling down his family tree. At the end, he is seen joining his long gone family members for a drink. And Caleb is the bartender. It's incredibly touching, given how bleak this comic's setting is. This is truly one of a kind. Childhood horrors meet adult scenarios and trepidations, encouraging you to fix what you can now before it’s all gone. A major theme in this is that all life ends at the same exact place. All paths are bound for the same destination. Surreal Horror: The comic dips into this from time to time. Issue 13 for example, is one giant palindrome that tells the story of a man who lost his husband/boyfriend to cancer and goes on a journey into the sewers. Then things get freaky...
