I like the sound of the Belgian place in NYC, sounds like a VERY nice place to spend a lazy afternoon.

Leffe. It’s one of the world’s most recognisable Belgian beers. Understandably so, it’s had more than 800, albeit tumultuous, years to build a brand and nail that quality. There are few beers that have quite such a development time. All in all a very satisfying drink, my favourite of the bottled Leffe’s by a small margin, one to treat with respect though. The flavour is well rounded, slightly sweet, slightly spicy, but with all these brews there is something that is distinctively ‘Belgian’. Okay so not quite trappist, but once you’ve tasted a Belgian beer, you’ll spot that flavour whenever you are fortunate enough to encounter it. Moving on to Leffe Brune, again at 6.2%, you notice that the head is a latte coffee colour, and doesn’t last as long as the Blonde, but it still leaves a respectable lacing down the glass.

Well, after reading Bob the Brit’s great review of all these Leffe beers, I knew I had to try one. Fortunately for me, my local shop had the Leffe Blond – which I tried. This was my first ‘Abbey Ale’, and all I can say is that this beer is very different than other beers – special even.

The Leffe Blond does create an enormous head that took a LONG tome to go down, and when it does it leaves an incredible amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma and the taste, are, for me, hard to describe except that they were different – and very satisfying! Bob the Brit, I think, describes it perfectly in his review above, so I won’t try to add to that. Straffe Hendrik, a smart little Belgian brewery located in the centre of Bruges, produces zippy, refreshing ales. Their Blond is a light and tangy pale ale, whereas the Bruin is a classic brown ale with a full body. 3. Chimay (red top 7%, blue top 9%) Abbey beers are different from (although similar to) Trappist beers, they are brewed by commercial breweries in something approaching the Trappist style and tend to take the name of a nearby Abbey. This is a largely successful endeavour by the Belgian brewing industry to cash in on the reputation of Trappist beers. In the case of Leffe, the brand was resurrected in the 1950’s although the original abbey was devastated during the French Revolution; beer hadn’t been brewed at the Leffe Abbey for nearly two hundred years. And indeed still isn’t! Produced at a Trappist monastery in the Ardennes, Rochefort beers are typically dark and sweet and come in three main versions: Rochefort 6, Rochefort 8, and the extremely popular Rochefort 10, which has a deep reddish-brown colour and a delicious fruity palate. 17. Rodenbach (Rodenbach 5%, Rodenbach Grand Cru 6.5%) The abbey has been damaged by both natural and human circumstances over the years: the Meuse river flooded the brewery in 1460, and six years later a fire damaged the abbey, but by the 17th century it prospered. The brewery was confiscated by the state in 1796, and in 1809, after making beer only in limited quantities, it was closed. The old kettles were melted down for the weapons industry during World War 1. [2]

This was probably my favourite beer when I used to sit downstairs in E55 when I was 18 years old, in Melbourne. I hardly drank it since then, until now. Just drank the Leffe blonde, now let's try this.

Neil, keep looking! Where I am its hard to find anything other than the Blonde as well. I would just ask the manager of the places you find the Leffe Blonde if they can get the others for you. Please can anyone tell me if a 3l bottle of Leffe Blond that is 10 years plus old will still be good to drink or will it poison us? It has a champagne cork. So, in conclusion, Leffe produce a fine range of Abbey style beers. As such they’re industrial rather than craft or artisan beers, but they’re full bodied, full flavoured and well worth seeking out. Leffe Bruin has its soft, deep brown color, the perfect balance between a slightly bitter taste and a hint of caramel thanks to an age-old tradition. Thanks to a touch of coffee and chocolate, this beer is even more popular. In Leffe’s chalice glass, the creamy collar, the roasted aromas and the spicy taste have the ability to stop time. ”The Leffe beers are served in an elegantly engraved chalice on a tall stem. The glass’ bowl allows the aromas to come to the fore perfactly. The letter ‘L’, etched at the bottom of the glass, ensures a continuous production of bubbles that means the head remains intact for longer. For those in or near NYC, I recommend this little Belgian place on 75th between 2nd and 3rd Ave (can’t remember the name) — some decent selections on tap, more in bottles, nearly all in the abbey/trappist style. A fun place to spend a lazy weekend afternoon.

Leffe Brune is full bodied, close to a Stout or a Porter, but not too heavy, very quaffable. ( Terry Pratchett– one of my favourite authors – describes quaffing as ‘a lot like drinking, but your ears can get wet’.) The flavour of the Brune is altogether richer, fuller, slightly sweet, but ultimately satisfying there are notes of dark treacle, and chocolate, and a hint of coffee, but it’s not too sweet. Against these ales, most lagers and British ales pale (no pun intended) by comparison. I am not a big beer drinker but was introduced to Leffe Blond on a trip to Nottingham a couple of years ago. Simply excellent and now I look for it every where. Was hugely pleased to find it in my local supermarket in MALAYSIA(!?!) – Jaya 33 for those interested. Specific to the Brussels area and representing one of the world's oldest styles of beer making, lambic beers are tart because they are brewed with at least thirty percent raw wheat as well as the more usual malted barley. The key feature is, however, the use of wild yeast in their production, a process of spontaneous fermentation in which the yeasts of the atmosphere gravitate down into open wooden casks over a period of between two and three years. Draught lambic is extremely rare, but it is served in central Brussels at A la Bécasse. The bottled varieties are often modified, but Cantillon Lambik is authentic, an excellent drink with a lemony zip. It is produced at the Cantillon brewery, in Anderlecht, which is home to the Gueuze Museum (see below). Lindemans Lambik is similar and a tad more commonplace. 10. Gueuze (Cantillon Gueuze Lambic 5%) Well I’d certainly try it. I’ve not heard of anyone trying it, but I can’t see anything that would cause you harm. Maybe a small, cautious, sip initially. Please let us know how you get on!Once again a type of beer rather than a particular brew, Kriek is made from a base beer to which cherries are added or, in the case of the more commercial brands, cherry juice and perhaps even sugar. It is decanted from a bottle with a cork, as with sparkling wine. The better examples are not too sweet and taste simply wonderful. Other fruit beers are available too, but Kriek is perhaps the most successful. 13. Kwak (8%) Drinking bottled Leffe Blond right now, fabulous beer, my favourite lager that I have tried thus far, can only get it bottled in Ireland also. I was surprised to hear it is made by Artois, I don’t really like Stella, I am assuming they are made in the same brewery. I will look out for some of the other Trappist beers, but I can’t imagine they get much better than Leffe This Flemish beer, the main product of the family-run Bosteels brewery, is not all that special – it's an amber ale sweetened by a little sugar – but it's served in dramatic style with its distinctive hourglass placed in a wooden stand. 14.
