One reason may be that it tells us a lot more about their personalities and their preferences. Does the fact that Marilyn Monroe favored a geranium scent tell us something about her personality? This perfume was Givenchy L’Interdit that was created specifically for Hepburn in 1957. Givenchy L’Interdit has notes of bergamot, iris, jasmine, narcissus, rose, sandalwood, and violet. Dominik’s vision of Blonde as a “rescue fantasy” filled with showcasing rape and other sexist examples of oppression tarnishes Monroe’s legacy and Monroe as a person. Filming and presenting such acts about an actual person is severely disturbing. Monroe was not some weak damsel in distress. I believe anyone who watched Blonde and contributed to it gaining a top 10 spot on Netflix whilst knowing its content is complicit in this mistreatment.

An original 1921 bottle of Chanel No. 5. Christie Mayer Lefkowith Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum As he explains: ‘I feel immensely proud to be part of the family business and to have the opportunity to help introduce our perfume house to a new generation. I have such fond memories of visiting the shop from a young age, and it is very nostalgic for me to be around the fragrances that I have grown up with my whole life. They really are like old friends to me.’ Later, Warhol reflected on the (arguably underrated) power of smell, as well as a scent’s ability to be a time capsule in and of itself: The commercial also features an alleged recording of Marilyn discussing the interview where the famous No.5 quote originated, saying that she wears nothing but Chanel No.5 to bed “Because it’s the truth… and yet, I don’t want to say nude. But it’s the truth!”

By 1975, the year Philosophy was published, Warhol described his scent collection as "very big," though he wasn’t specific about how many bottles it comprised. We do know, however, that Warhol’s perfume connoisseurship continued for the rest of his life—he made several mentions of perfume throughout the Andy Warhol Diaries, which he stopped writing just five days before his death in 1987. One of the most notable mistreatments Monroe experienced was in 1953 when Playboy Magazine published nude photographs she had taken before her career without Monroe’s knowledge or consent, only fuelling the previous and proceeding restrictions of her career. In a contemporary outlook, this would align with today’s female stars having nudes leaked. We can also identify Monroe’s misogynistic struggles in today’s entertainment industry, with modern stars such as Britney Spears, Megan Fox and Sydney Sweeney all suffering this same sexualisation which results in psychological issues.Furthermore, at the 2022 Met Gala, reality star Kim Kardashian grabbed the headlines by wearing the same dress Monroe wore in her happy birthday speech to President JFK, one of her last public appearances. Kardashian not only milked Monroe’s name to gain a spotlight, but she also tore the dress, sparking outrage from Monroe’s fans. It was Gabrielle Chanel who famously said that while fashion fades, only style remains the same. When it comes to perfumes, Polge says that couldn’t be truer. Season by season, garments come and go. A scent, meanwhile, must be enduring. It’s this that Polge keeps at the heart of his work. Not only to ensure the legacy of Chanel lives on, but that of his father, too. She launched her pioneering perfume empire that includes iconic scents such as Forever, Passion, and White Diamonds, and the latter is one of the best-selling celebrity perfumes in history. According to The Mirror, Miller’s biographer, Professor Bigsby, said: “He was completely bowled over by her. It was certainly a love affair. One of his love letters to her was an almost adolescent outpouring of love." Just because the Chanel No.5 story about Marilyn might be a bit of a myth doesn’t mean we can’t show the iconic house of Chanel some love! Take a look at our next article, where we round up our favorites!

It’s only once I collect a creation,” he says, “that I begin to truly assess the compound’s composition. And that’s by no means simply just how the fragrance feels initially.” One of the most elegant actresses of all time, it’s unsurprising that the fashion house Givenchy wanted to create a perfume for Hepburn, who already was a big fan of their clothes.

Perfume Buzz

At the heart of this operation sits Chanel No 5, the world’s most popular perfume. This year marks its centenary, in that time faces of the scent have included Nicole Kidman, Catherine Deneuve and, more recently, actor and activist Marion Cotillard. Now, for the first time, a book dedicated to exploring the perfume’s history has been published, celebrating this milestone. The full Jewish wedding, for which Monroe converted, was held a few days later on July 1 at Miller’s agent, Kay Brown’s house. Monroe, who never knew who her real father was, was given away by her acting teacher, Lee Strasberg, and the couple gave wedding rings to each other which had “now is forever” inscribed on them. Variety later famously commemorated the event with a story entitled: “Egghead Weds Hourglass”. So there you have it, Marilyn Monroe’s favorite perfume: Floris’ Rose Geranium Toilet Water! Or at least, that’s a very educated guess (you don’t buy six bottles unless you’re a fan…). Still, the question remains why we are so fascinated by the perfumes celebrities wear in the first place? When it comes to Hollywood icons, very few have obtained the level of fame and success that Marilyn Monroe reached. Even after all these years, Monroe is undoubtedly one of contemporary culture’s most legendary stars. Born Norma Jean on June 1st, 1926, the actor cemented herself into pop cultural DNA through her onscreen performances of comedic ‘blonde bombshell’ characters, a term synonymous with Monroe. From this, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s. Film and society employed her as a statement badge for its re-assessment of sexual expression. The fragrance featured top notes of citronella, geranium, and greens, as well as middle notes of palmarosa, rose, rosewood and a bottom note of cedarwood.
