The second set up folder allows sound and volume to be controlled LCD brightness adjusted and the memory card in use to be formatted. Having said that the IXUS 220 HS doesn't exactly drop down significantly in performance when it comes to low light shooting either, and it is this respect that we were most pleased with the camera's capability. On the back there’s a two-way mode switch for toggling between Smart Auto and the current selection on the exposure mode menu. A dedicated video record button located in the top right hand corner of the back plate, in lieu of its own option on the shooting mode slider switch, signals the importance leant that facility, as does a mini HDMI port alongside a joint AV out/USB 2. The options ranged around it are the usual suspects of exposure compensation (here +/- 2EV), flash, display and auto/macro focus mode settings. Detail is noticeably softer centre of frame and could do with contrast being tweaked to add some missing definition, but on the whole not at all a bad result from a pocket point and shooter. The last button we haven't yet mentioned on the camera back is the self-explanatory 'menu', tucked into the right hand corner near the base. In many ways the new Canon IXUS 220 HS is about as close to the definition of a standard point-and-shoot camera as you can get, but with high-end build quality and a thickness of a mere 19. The flash can be used in slow sync as well as auto modes and the AF illuminator on the front of the camera can be configured to double-up as a red-eye reduction lamp, illuminating just prior to an exposure to force people’s irises to contract.

If the file has been modified from its original state, some details may not fully reflect the modified file. In my opinion, this camera handles low-light situations very good - but only in the manual mode (Program, P), and when the user gains a bit of a felling what settings to use and when. Decent build, a dose of style and a better-than-average feature set, including HDMI output alongside standard AV/USB output. Press the on/off button and the ELPH 300 HS / IXUS 220 HS is ready to take a shot in about two and a half seconds; that’s on the slow side of average, but comparable with other ELPH / IXUS models.More importantly perhaps, these options offer up an explanation of their purpose and thanks to the enhanced resolution of the LCD, users can instantly see the effect of utilising them, ensuring that the device will make a fantastic choice for novices who want to increase their understanding of basic photography principles such as metering, white balance and exposure.
