About this deal

A green light turns on when you’ve pressed halfway to let you know the auto-focus is locked in, with a second light blinking if the auto-flash is going to fire. Having the dial instead two buttons is a big difference and a main selling point in favor of this over the "other" AF-7, but they are otherwise the same camera as far as technical specifications are considered. There are some limitations exposure-wise, but using the right negative film under the right lighting conditions can easily overcome them, letting the photographer enjoy a film compact which is great fun to use but can also deliver great results.

The viewfinder is nice and clear, though the frame lines do blend into the scene on very bright days. The Canon Sure Shot Tele is big and old and clunky, at least in outward appearance, but it’s a serious sleeper. One is a self-timer while the other winds back the film before you’ve finished it, should you want to do that. After checking the specs on these, the Zoomtec was the first against the wall when the revolution came – the lens was slow, and at 165mm, the far end of the zoom felt a bit on the long side for me. A couple of years back I actually managed to get one of these past the door staff at a packed Molchat Doma gig in London’s O2 Kentish Town after I told them it was film and I couldn’t record the show. With all the quirks and pros of a disposable camera and the sharpness of a 35mm SLR, it doesn't get more user-friendly or fun than this!

I should add that I’ll be holding onto this camera for the summer, and will update this review with additional photos over time. Want a compact fun but good shooter get a Olympus XA2 or LC-A or if AF is your bag try its big brother the Canon Sure shot 60. The viewfinder is large and bright, and the projected frame lines are highly legible in all shooting conditions. The Sure Shot Tele’s solution is stronger and more reliable, and per Canon’s manual, the battery should last five years of normal use. While it’s true that the Contax T cameras are wonderful, and the fancy Yashicas and the svelte Olympuses are, too, the prevailing myth is just that – a myth. The older AF-7 had a 3 element in 3 group set up with 3 point AF and I suspect this is much the same. The colour images on this post were shot on Kodak Colorplus 200 and the black and white ones were on Rollei Retro 400. I also have a Minolta AF50 Big Finder, which lives up to its name and from memory I think is comparable in size and clarity to the Canon. The Canon Sure Shot is notorious in the film community, with multiple different models being made from 1979 to 1988. The shots were carefully metered, composed, thought about; I was so looking forward to seeing the results.

It also has a tilt-feature on the bottom of the camera, something that only a few of the Canon point and shoot cameras have. I found this short review which talks of a soft lens – this didn’t put me off though, in fact, it just added weight to my ability to forget about trying to achieve “high quality” results, and instead gave me the impetus to just snap.Build quality is very good and the feel and chunky size of the camera leave no doubt in my mind it will work for a long time. The takeaway, for me, has been that I primarily keep the flash in its native automatic mode and let the camera decide. Regardless, all of these elements together – the well-thought out design, the huge viewfinder, the easy point ‘n’ shooting, and the automatic winding – made this cheap little Canon compact film camera ideal for distraction-free street photography. In fact, I think the only thing that detracted from the fun of shooting the Canon Sure Shot EX is the fact that the viewfinder is a little small.
