About this deal

Part of me feels that Paul did not have a great start in life and his childhood was prey to all sorts of abuse.

But - there's always that 'but' - I was still really glad that he got his happy-as-it-could-be ending. Idealistic navy Lieutenant Jacob Grimm just wanted to honor his mother's sacrifice in the last great war. Instead, he became a personal trainer/fitness coach and went on to become very successful with that. This new book gives a warm and sympathetic biography of a man who really did achieve against all odds and was much liked by his comrades – Strongly Recommended.

After enjoying stunning success against the British 8th Army through 1941 and much of 1942, General Erwin Rommel and his famed Afrika Korps were now on the defensive, having been defeated at El Alamein in Egypt less than a week earlier. Against All Odds adds rich colour and context to results that have echoed through the ages, celebrating those teams who dared to dream, and triumphed over footballing giants. In the far distance, men could make out the steeple of a Catholic church rising above the port of Fedala. The events take place in Europe, Africa, Asia and North America; they are linked only by the bravery and devilment which led military men to risk their lives for a last ditch attempt to advance their cause. The very inspriring story of the founder of Box Aerobics and his horrific childhood that led to his infamous career. These are questions that Alex Kershaw explores in this captivating read that covers the exploits of four of the most highly decorated soldiers in American history.

Despite the military aspect, this really reminded me of Nathan Lowell's work in the Solar Clipper series. His emotional and psychological state are intensely realistic, powerful and gritty, as instead of losing control, he focuses using his mother’s memory to keep him balanced. Corbyn: Against All Odds presents a new essay from Richard Seymour, in which he examines this bizarre, and thus-far unsuccessful, coup attempt, and attempts to outline Corbyn’s prospects in such unpredictable and turbulent times, alongside an extract from his new book Corbyn: The Strange Rebirth of Radical Politics. An inspirational true story of how an abandoned baby made a success of his life, truly " against all odds'' he was smart enough to work out how to survive these institutional bullies .The rich oil fields beneath their reservation brought millions of dollars into the tribe annually, distributed to tribal members holding "headrights" that could not be bought or sold but only inherited. With the outbreak of war, Walter wasted no time enlisting in the British Army, initially as a Private in the newly formed 17th (Football) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. This page-turner surges forward with the pacing of a true-crime thriller, elevated by Grann's crisp and evocative prose and enhanced by dozens of period photographs.

In short, this is a well-intentioned book which, notwithstanding some interesting material, such as its photographs, is ultimately rather pedestrian. When I worked in a psychiatric facility, there were children who had been sexually abused at very young ages. it turned out that six of us had died, several by slow suicide in the form of heroin abuse, and at least two by faster means. There are multiple other characters in this book (and I am not going to give spoilers), but they are all just extraordinary.Sure, maybe it explains something about the character's choices later, but I don't think that actually holds within the context of the story.
