B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. a b "Auchentoshan profile". WhiskyClassifieds.com. Archived from the original on 8 March 2009 . Retrieved 24 December 2008. On the palate, more dark fruits, Christmas cake and baked apples (some cherries as well). More vanilla and toffee. Spicy, with pepper and ginger. Smoother with water. Also very nice - and straightforward. For many years Auchentoshan billed itself as the only triple distilled single malt Scotch whisky. The distillation technique is commonly publicised, especially by Irish distillers, as a method which results in a narrower selection of cut spirit and an eventual lighter make – ergo a ‘smoother’ final whisky. But, Auchentoshan have been far from the only Scotch whisky to produce triple distilled spirit – Benrinnes and Springbank (via Hazelburn which was first introduced in 2005) have both used partial triple distillation, and latterly, Benriach, Benromach and Bruichladdich and have all produced small batch whiskies using the technique. But, it’s true to say that in Scotland currently, only Auchentoshan utilises triple distillation exclusively. Likewise, all of its production is used for single malt rather than blending. When compared to the ‘other’ current commonly available triple distilled spirit – Hazelburn, Auchentoshan’s production methods are starkly different – whilst Hazelburn runs a blank second distillation (no cuts are made) to increase the volume of heavier compounds within its make, Auchentoshan takes a single cut from the second distillation. This is passed to the spirit still at high strength, whilst the lower strength cut is redistilled in the intermediate still. The result has less reflux than Hazelburn and an overall lighter style of make.Auchentoshan 12 Years is a single malt with a pleasant amount of character. It’s a whisky that I wouldn’t say I’ve been avoiding reviewing, but I haven’t exactly gone out of my way to secure a bottle so I was incredibly happy to see it show up in the Flaviar tasting kit I was sent – which is a neat thing in and of itself. Especially when I find out that he's talked to my wife and told her that she should have married an asian man and why hasn't she had babies yet?! Auchentoshan distillery ( / ˌ ɒ x ən ˈ t ɒ ʃ ən/ OKH-ən- TOSH-ən) is a single malt whisky distillery in the west of Scotland. [4] :15 The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. Finish: The licorice note detected on the palate carried through on the finish that I found to be of medium length and drying. It had a slightly harsh quality that detracted slightly from the experience.

Nose: gentle. Light citrus, a bit of chocolate fudge, and...a touch of smoke? I swear I'm not crazy, it's there. Not exactly peat smoke, maybe more like faint cigar ash. Also some florals. Summer meadow. Not the most captivating nose ever, but still interesting. The Whisky Barrel– Lowland Malts". TheWhiskyBarrel.com. Archived from the original on 8 January 2009 . Retrieved 24 December 2008. The Auchentoshan 12 Year Old replaced the distillery’s 10 Year Old expression as their entry-level single malt. Bottled at 40% abv, the whisky has a deep, off-color gold appearance. Another way to look at it would be as a bright, well-polished bronze coloring. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. Balance: There is a good transition of aromas and flavours between nose, palate, and finish. I found most flavours to be consistently present, without being in competition with one another. Nose: Toffee, fudge with orange elbowing its way between them. A very full flavoured aroma that I could sniff for ages.

As a general rule I like the darker side of whisk(e)y. In American whiskey I like a bolder wood and rye grain influence that gives a whiskey those earthy, spicy and dark fruit notes. In single malts I like first fill sherry cask whisky that has those dark wine, cocoa and ashy notes or Islay whiskeys with their inky peat. I also like darker non-peated-non-heavily-sherried single malts like Craigellachie and this Auchentoshan 12 Years fits firmly in that last category; it’s completely enjoyable from first sniff to last sip.Whiskybase B.V. If we decide not to exercise or enforce any right or provision of these Terms, such decision shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision. Taste: Toffee and fudge again, berries of some sort and maybe raisins. Very full, rich and satisfying. The nose conjures spiced honey mead in a musty old barrel, what with its heavy, creamy sweet cereals and spice blend enmeshed in a certain earthiness. In contrast to that, the flavor is on the dry side, quite woody and tannin-heavy, with only a moderate malty sweetness to round it out, this seasoned with vanilla and ginger. The finish is just as dry and gingery, with a long, lingering warmth.

At the same time I've been planning to send some whisky samples to my friend and fellow Connosr member, Systemdown, as he had the good idea that exchanging samples would be a good way to experience more whiskies for much cheaper. Auchentoshan History Timeline". Auchentoshan.co.uk. Archived from the original on 7 December 2008 . Retrieved 24 December 2008. Finish: Quite long and satisfying, the toffee and fudge remain and I get a lingering feeling of warmth and all being right in the world. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. This gets talked about as a starter whisky or a good whisky to introduce beginners to. If you're looking for bold character in a whisky then you'll be wasting your time with this. However, whilst it's a simple whisky, it's got some subtle positive characteristics, and when you come home and don't want much complexity, boldness, or iconoclasm, and just want a simple, light and subtle whisky, this often it's the spot.

If i had to choose this over the Glendronach 12, I'd take this. The Glendronach was a slight disappointment (despite the fact I gave it a higher rating.) Similar to the nose the palate comes across oily and filled with notes of malt, overripe fruit, savory spice, butterscotch and brown butter along with a touch of vanilla and that same general oily earthiness.
