There is an initial aroma of gentle smoke on the nose of this unique peated whisky, alongside heather, orange peel and tropical fruit, with light butterscotch and sweet vanilla. The Weak of Peat is an experiment that has undoubtedly paid off, creating a rich, delicately smoky single malt with honey, vanilla and citrus notes.

Aged for 3 years longer, this longer maturation has given the flavour time to intensify, leaving a smooth, creamy finish swirling alongside the subtle smoke.

This single malt whisky has been matured in traditional oak casks before being finished in American Oak casks with a hint of sweet toasted oak.For a week a year, The Balvenie distils a batch of peated malt, resulting in a whisky rich in honey, vanilla and citrus notes with an extra layer of delicate smokiness. Distillery Manager, Ian Millar, reminisces on how The Week of Peat came to be: “In a way, The Week of Peat [is] nothing new. A sweet and smoky 17-year-old single malt from Balvenie Stories collection, made during the one week of the year that the distillery uses peated malt.

This is the second Week of Peat expression in the series which was previously a 14-year-old single malt. For a week a year, The Balvenie distills a batch of peated malt, resulting in a whisky rich in honey, vanilla and citrus notes with an extra layer of delicate smokiness. The building took fifteen months to complete, and on 1 May 1893, the first distillation took place at the Balvenie Distillery. Released as part of The Balvenie Stories during 2021 and exclusively made available in the UK through Clink, Week of Peat 17 Year Old is now available through selected specialist retailers. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect.

For one week each year, Speyside's Balvenie distillery mixes things up, switching from its usual unpeated style, to producing peated single malt with Speyside peat! It’s storied history is full of experimentation, a spirit of curiosity that has been passed down through the generations. Two distillery workers heavily involved with the peat week project were mashman Brian Webster and maltman Robbie Gormley, both now retired. Through careful trials, he and the rest of the team were able to produce whisky that wrapped the classic distillery character in a blanket of smoke.A bottle of Balvenie 17-year-old Week of Peat special edition, first released in 2020 at a great drinking strength of 49. This time, it’s the distillery manager Gordon who has picked his favourite combination of casks to create the most moreish of whiskies. In the mash house there was a beautiful smell of porridge, sweet honey and gentle smoke; it was good enough to bottle! Aromas of raisins, butterscotch and sweet spices fill the nose, and the palate offers notes of dark chocolate, orange peel, banana, raisins and caramel. The first ‘Week of Peat’ whisky release was The Balvenie Week of Peat 14 Years Old, which launched globally in 2019.
