About this deal

The Tori Amos song "Taxi Ride" from her 2002 album Scarlet's Walk is a partial homage to Aucoin. He made a cameo appearance in a fourth season episode (Episode 2: "The Real Me") of the long-running HBO series Sex and the City. He was a major fan of the Comedy Central show Strangers With Candy and appeared in an episode alongside Amy Sedaris and Stephen Colbert as a funeral makeup artist (Season 2, Episode 4: The Goodbye Guy). In the show Fat Actress debut episode "Big Butts", Kirstie Alley's female hair and makeup artist goes by the name Kevyn after her inspiration Kevyn Aucoin.

TB: His dad. We didn't have the rights to all the estate. It's complicated. Also boyfriends, they all gave their pictures and stuff to us. Eric Sakas gave us so much of the films he took when he was with Kevyn. Because Kevyn demanded that everything be documented at all times.

Read this in The Internet Archive. I'm sure the original coffee table book must be more impressive with larger and clearer pictures. But I'm glad I read it anyway. Kevin draws faces with expertise. I liked reading about his past as well and feel very proud that he survived his turbulent adolescence growing up as a closeted gay teen in a conservative small town. Now, he is one of the most notable makeup artists of our generation and seeing him live his truth and release such popular makeup products is very inspiring. The book would be a great introduction to beginners of makeup and fans of Aucoin. The obvious aim of this book is to show people how to apply make up, which it does very well. What makes it worthwhile is all the ways it goes above and beyond that basic goal. The photography is beautiful (it's worth looking at just for that). Kevyn Aucoin's story of growing up, the stories of his siblings, and their role in the development of his talent is compelling and inspiring. Aucoin eventually found his birth parents, and was able to personally meet them and his half-siblings. TB: Not me, no. I see it as taking care of people. How I always feel emotionally doing makeup is like - everybody is kind of mean to the model and think they have it so great. Maybe the photographer, they're all mumbling, like, "Ach, the model, oh she's got it so easy, she just does this …" I don't know, but I'm so close to their face and I can sense, they're kind of lost souls sometimes. Not always. TB: Yes. Linda Wells says it. He was ahead of it. What's next? People always say he would have been amazing on social media now. But I tend to think that he would be onto whatever's next. Something we haven't seen.

From magazine covers to iconic editorials, if it was a high profile beauty shoot in the 90s, chances are it was kevyn. Here, we’re celebrating 16 of his most iconic looks – from a Marilyn-esque Naomi to baby-faced Nicole. Kevyn does a really great job of encouraging the reader to experiment with makeup, and not just with colors, but also with the way you apply it, location, tools, and more. He does a GREAT job of summarizing styles throughout the decades and gives you step-by-step instructions with color and makeup suggestions for you to replicate the looks. I especially loved the history of the "Eyebrow" (30s thin brows)and "lip" (50s full lip). I really loved the "film noir" and "hollywood bombshell" looks. TB: I think it's totally of the now. All we care about is perception. That's why so many people are killing themselves?
