Parents' contracts for music and LAMDA lessons are almost always directly with the individual teachers rather than with the school, therefore we are unable to put this charge on the school bill. We believe that this gives our pupils the best value for money and allows us to offer a broad range of instruments. If parents wish to stop their music lessons they should inform the music teacher with at least half a term's notice. Gill and Simon are accused by “WS”, a prospective member of the community on a six-month trial, of influencing community decisions through intimidation; but no evidence has been provided as to what decisions have been forced through in this way. There are a limited number of small endowment funds which provide bursaries to enable pupils who meet certain specified criteria to come to Monkton who would otherwise be unable to do so on financial grounds. A limited number of bursaries are also offered each year, out of School funds, with the level of assistance offered being means-tested and dependent on completion and assessment of a full confidential statement of financial circumstances (CSFC). There is no fixed limit to the level of assistance provided in any single case, although typically bursary support is not more than a third of annual fees and financially there is a total limit to the amount of assistance that can be offered to pupils in any one year. Higher priority is given to children of clergy or missionaries, or where special circumstances give rise to a particularly deserving case, alongside those that are Boarding and at the Senior School. The Muay Thai headband is known in Thailand as a “Mongkhon” (alt. Mongkon or Mongkol). It is a traditional headgear unique to the sport of Muay Thai. It is worn by the athletes as part of their pre-fight attire and when they perform the Wai Kru Ram Muay (dance) ceremony that precedes their fights. As Jolley uses the expression, "got the monk on" means something in the range between seething with anger and violently enraged. You question the effectiveness of the adversarial system in courts because it places the victim in opposition to the offender. What is the alternative? Muay Thai Mongkhons are traditionally handmade by the trainers of a gym/camp for their fighters and then brought to a temple to be blessed by revered Thai monks or holy men.

What should people do if they have a friend or a relation involved with a controlling and possibly abusive partner? Monkton is a very special and unusual place, as you will see if you come to visit. Our pupils are grounded, real and kind but equally they are thoughtful, diligent and ambitious in their goals. From a very broad perspective I’d like to see domestic abuse given more status. I think we need to stop seeing it as an argument between people and start seeing it as a dangerous situation in which somebody has become a threat to somebody else. We tend to assess domestic abusers as husbands, boyfriends, lovers. We don’t think of them as psychopaths, narcissists, killers. We need to make that leap. You mention that many murders go unrecognised. Do you have any idea what kind of percentage of domestic murders in the UK that amounts to?
